Red Light Runners

In today’s episode Chuck talks about the Arizona’s red light running problem. Arizona is the most dangerous state in the country when it comes to red light runners. Always stay alert when you’re traveling in the valley and around the state.

Red Light Runners Transcript

Hi folks, this is going to be a little bit different. It’s not really advice, but I was shocked when I saw this. Well, in a way I was not surprised. This was a story by Scott Bowles of the USA Today (A newspaper that is distributed throughout the United States).  The article is “Arizona Has The Nation’s Deadliest Red Light Runners.”

Now considering all of the motorcycle accidents and car accident cases that I have done over the last 30 years. You know there are going to be a lot of accidents, especially when you are turning left and someone runs a red light in front of you. But I didn’t know we were number one.

Arizona is Home To 3 of The 4 Worst Cities for Red Light Violations

We have more fatalities in Arizona from red light runners – excuse me, we have more fatalities from car accidents than they do in any other place in the United States. The first four cities nationally when it comes to the number of red light violators are Phoenix in number 1, Tucson is number 3, and number 4 is Mesa.

Folk’s it’s dangerous to ride, don’t make it any more dangerous for yourself. When you approach  a traffic light, even though it is green for you, don’t assume somebody is going to stop. Do not make that assumption.

Always Stay Alert When Approaching an Intersection, Even A Green Light

Just today somebody turned right from the left lane which was four lanes away from me. Had I been on a bike, I may not have noticed them because I was paying more attention to what was in front of me. In other words this person, whose license plate said something along the lines of “Snow Bird”  which caused me to start laughing after the fact, literally went across all of the lanes of traffic to turn right in front of me. Just be careful.

In addition, this past weekend I saw a fellow on a bike, he was dressed appropriately. He had safety gear on. He had a helmet on. But in his left hand (his clutch hand) he had his cell phone. This was while he was still doing 40 or 45 miles per hour going down Frank Lloyd Wright. He was attempting to punch something into it, whether it was a text message or an email or looking for a contact, who knows.

The point is, he was riding with one hand, which in and of it’s self can be unsafe. But second of all he was more focused on his cell phone than the road. It is never that important to interrupt your ride or your drive to reach for that cell phone and do something. Just wait until you stop, please. You might save a life, and it might be your own.

Thank you.
